Obituary
Gabriel Cohen

Gabriel Cohen, Jewish educator and community activist, died on May 18, 2007 in Bellevue from complications of a stroke suffered in July 2005, immediately following his testimony arguing for the rights of the homeless to the King County Council.
Gabriel was born on April 19, 1926 in Montreal, Canada and spent his childhood in Jerusalem and Brooklyn. After graduating from Yeshiva University, he joined the fight for the liberation and independence of Israel serving as a tank commander from 1947 through 1949. He became an ardent advocate for peace in the Middle East, serving on the board of directors of the Compassionate Listening Project, an organization dedicated to reconciliation and communication.
Gabriel earned a Master’s degree in Education and later a Doctorate in Gerontology from the University of Rochester.
His early career was devoted to Jewish education. He served as education director at Germantown Jewish Center in Philadelphia, Pa. and Congregation Har Shalom in Potomac, Md. He 0was also the headmaster of Solomon Schechter Day School in Philadelphia. For over a decade he spent his summers running the educational programs at Camp Ramah in the Poconos. He was executive director of the Board of Jewish Education in Rochester, N.Y. and moved to Seattle to take a similar position at the Seattle Jewish Education Council.
Gabriel was elected president of the Jewish Educators’ Assembly, an organization of professionals dedicated to the advancement of Jewish education. An educator and activist, he was also on the national board of directors of the Gray Panthers and the Retired Senior Volunteers. He was appointed to the King County Senior Advisory Council. A member of the board of Temple B’nai Torah in Bellevue, he was active in efforts to create tikkun olam (repairing the world). Gabriel’s doctorate was on intergenerational education, and he used his knowledge to benefit organizations such as Generations United and Intergenerational Innovations.
Gabriel is survived by Anita, his wife of 25 years, of Bellevue; brothers, Daniel (Fern) Cohen and Joseph (Claire) Cohen of New York; son Michael (Soni) Cohen of St. Louis Park, Minn.; daughters, Mina (Jeffrey Berenson) Cohen of Mendocino, Calif., Debby (Sam) Tucker of Potomac, Md., Elaine Lipson of Seattle, and Judi Tamblin of Rochester, N.Y.; grandchildren Aaron and Benjamin Cohen, Elana and Yael Berenson, Seth and Jennifer Tucker, and Richard and Maria Tamblin. He is also survived by his first wife, Judith Meisel, who resides in Santa Barbara, Calif.
Funeral services were held May 20 at Temple B’nai Torah in Bellevue. Memorials can be made to the Gabriel Cohen Education Fund and sent to Temple B’nai Torah, 15727 NE 4th St., Bellevue, WA 98008.

Madeleine will celebrate her Bat Mitzvah on June 30, 2007 at Temple B’nai Torah in Bellevue.
Madeleine is the daughter of Sen. Brian Weinstein and Gaylene Vaden of Mercer Island, and the sister of Trevor and Arielle Weinstein. Her grandparents are Nancy Vaden of Virginia Beach, Va., Harold Weinstein of Bellevue, the late Cmdr. Donald E. Vaden and the late Bess Weinstein.
Madeleine is a 7th-Grader at Lake Middle School in Seattle.



Bar Mitzvah
David Lone

David celebrated his Bar Mitzvah on June 17, 2007 at the family home in Methow Valley. Rabbi Dov Gartenberg officiated.
David is the son of Jana Mohr and Ron Lone of Mazama, and the brother of Will and Jackson. He is the grandson of Irene and Mel Mohr of Boca Raton, Fla., Jim Lone of Seattle, and Sharon Lone-Browder and Jon Browder of Everett.
David is a 7th-Grader at Liberty Bell Junior/Senior High School. He enjoys golf, math competitions, playing baseball and basketball, reading, snowboarding and snowmobiling, playing airsoft with his friends, and swimming. For his mitzvah project, David is helping to expand the financial aid program available for sports at his school.

Jonathan Glen Newman

Jonathan will celebrate his Bar Mitzvah on July 7, 2007 at Herzl-Ner Tamid Conservative Congregation on Mercer Island.
Jonathan is the son of Nolan and Pat Newman of Bellevue, and the brother of Adam and Gina. He is the grandson of Abe and Ada Newman and Arthur and Bernice Getz of Cape Town, South Africa.
Jonathan is a 7th-Grader at Tyee Middle School. He enjoys playing select-level basketball, tennis and baseball, participating in National Junior Honors Society and Natural Helper programs at his school, and performing in the jazz band. For his mitzvah project, Jonathan will be making a contribution to Camp Solomon Schechter and supporting the Special Olympics.

Tessa will celebrate her Bat Mitzvah on June 16, 2007 at Herzl-Ner Tamid Conservative Congregation on Mercer Island.
Tessa is the daughter of Dan and Elaine Mintz of Sammamish and the sister of Jacob. She is the granddaughter of Dave and Eileen Mintz of Mercer Island and the late Jacob and Lillian Leff.
Tessa is a 7th-Grader at Dartmoor Academy. She enjoys music, photography, MySpace, IMing, Camp Schechter, boarding and volleyball.

Perry will celebrate her Bat Mitzvah on June 16, 2007 at Temple B’nai Torah in Bellevue.
Perry is the daughter of Tom and Donna Blankinship of Bellevue. She is the granddaughter of Rita Brown of Minneapolis, Minn. and Long Boat Key, Fla.
Perry is a 7th-Grader at the International School. She enjoys listening to alternative and rock music, hanging out with friends, bicycling, painting and other art.

Zachary Gerald Shucklin

Zach will celebrate his Bar Mitzvah on June 9, 2007 at Temple B’nai Torah in Bellevue.
Zach is the son of Jane and Phil Shucklin of Kirkland. His grandparents are Gerry and Arthur Worth of Hooksett, N.H., Ruth Klein of Mesa, Ariz., the late Myron Klein and the late Lillian and Gerald Shucklin.
Zach is a 7th-Grader at the International Community School. He enjoys acting, swimming, soccer, skiing and playing the piano.
For his mitzvah project, he played the piano on Sundays for residents of the Kline Galland Home and is collecting DVDs, Girl Scout cookies and coffee to send to a unit of Stryker Brigade soldiers in Iraq, who shipped out from Fort Lewis, Wash. He also provided several hundred Beanie Babies for the troops to hand out to Iraqi children.

Jeremy will celebrate his Bar Mitzvah on June 30, 2007 at Temple Beth Hatfiloh in Olympia.
Jeremy is the son of Janet and Jeff Reiner and the brother of Sammy, Joshua, and Jena. His grandparents are Marvin and Mary-Lynne Reiner of Olympia and Robert Schreier of West Texas. He is the great-grandson of Max and Rebecca Schreier of New York, the late Sam and Helene Grossman, and the late Edward and Esther Reiner.
Jeremy is a 7th-Grader at Jefferson Middle School. He enjoys tackle football, skiing, snowboarding and track.
For his mitzvah project, Jeremy has been volunteering at the Thurston County animal shelter and tutoring younger students at the Temple Beth Hatfiloh Beit Sefer.

Jason will celebrate his Bar Mitzvah on June 2, 2007 at Herzl-Ner Tamid Conservative Congregation on Mercer Island.
Jason is the son of Beth Cohanim and Jim Weisfield and the brother of Erica, Meghan, Sophia, Emma and Connor. His grandparents are Lois and Benjie Mayers and Judy and William Weisfield. He is the great-grandson of the late Ann Etsekson, the late Howard and Ethel Muschalik, and the late Dorothy and Arthur Weisfield.
Jason is a 7th-Grader at Islander Middle School. He enjoys skiing, biking, swimming, music, and being with friends and family. For his mitzvah project, Jason will donate baskets full of food as well as a portion of his Bar Mitzvah money to the Jewish Family Service Food Bank Program.

Jake will celebrate his Bar Mitzvah on June 2, 2007 at Congregation Ezra Bessaroth in Seattle.
Jake is the son of Barbara and Michael Israel of Lake Forest Park, and the brother of Talia. His grandparents are Menache Israel of Seattle, Candace and Marvin Groberman of Rancho Mirage, Calif., and the late Dorothy Israel.
Jake is a 7th-Grader at Kellogg Middle School. He enjoys computer programming, music, bike riding, and his dog Ozzie.

Lindsay Marie Baringer

Lindsay will celebrate her Bat Mitzvah on May 26, 2007 at Temple B’nai Torah in Bellevue.
Lindsay is the daughter of Diane Lefkow and John Baringer of Bellevue. She is the granddaughter of Marion and Paul Lefkow of Lake Oswego, Ore. Her great-grandparents are Richard Baringer of Salt Lake City, Utah and Nancy Brooks of Greenbrae, Calif.
Lindsay is a 9th-Grader at Pacific Cascade Freshman Campus. She enjoys soccer, guitar, singing and hanging out with friends.

Rosalie Sidell Steinbrecher

Rosalie Sidell Steinbrecher, 80, died on December 30, 2006, after a lingering illness. She was born in Seattle on December 30, 1926.
Rosalie was a distinguished graduate of Garfield High School, where she was valedictorian of her class in 1944. She went on to the University of Washington, graduating in 1948 as a social worker. She received the Phi Beta Kappa award and was second in her class. After graduation, she was employed by the University of Washington and the state as a social worker, and later worked for Jewish Family Service. In 1958, she married Dr. Kurt Steinbrecher. They had a son, Loren.
At one time, she worked for the first shelter operated by the Salvation Army for battered women. She also worked with high school students who returned to school, giving them training for employment. She was also a volunteer at Virginia Mason Hospital, where she counseled relatives of patients in the hospital. Rosalie was always friendly and interested in family. She was a member of Hadassah and Mizrachi Women.
The Steinbrechers were one-time members of Bikur Cholim and later Emanuel Congregation. At the time of her death, they were members of Congregation Shaarei Tefilah Lubavitch.

Matan Jacob Michelson

Karen and Scott Michelson announce the arrival of their son Matan Jacob on March 13, 2007. He weighed 6 lbs., 10 oz. and was 19-1/4 in. long.
Matan is the grandson of Toby and Wilbert “Mike” Jerome Michelson and Sarah and Israel “Sut” Julius Osofsky. He is named for his grandfathers.

Eliana Joeli Ertischek

Ben and Sarah Ertischek announce the arrival of their daughter Eliana Joeli on March 4, 2007 at Emanuel Hospital in Portland, Ore. She weighed 7 lbs., 11 oz.
Eliana is the sister of Samuel, Madeline and Jordan. She is the granddaughter of Sharon Elliott of Salem, Ore. and Mark and Jacqueline Ertischek of Anchorage, Alaska. She is named for her great-great grandmother Esther.

Axel Jones Rosencrantz

Axel will celebrate his Bar Mitzvah on May 12, 2007 at Temple B’nai Torah in Bellevue.
Axel is the son of Terry and Robert Rosencrantz of Seattle. He is the brother of Zadek, Maximum and Lily. His grandparents are Edith Rosencrantz of Seattle, and Lee and Sharlene Jones of Melbourne, Fla. He is the great-grandson of Evelyn Adams of Pittsfield, Vt.
Axel is a 7th-Grader at Washington Middle School. He enjoys piano, harp and swimming.

Larry Nicholas and Tom Underhill announce the arrival of their daughter, Orly Hannah, on April 2, 2007 at Legacy Salmon Creek Hospital in Vancouver, Wash. She was 6 lbs., 10 oz. and 19-1/2 in. long.
Orly is the granddaughter of Renee and Murray Nicholas of New York and Francis and Tom Underhill Sr. of Woodinville. Orly is named for Larry’s late mother, Harriet Nicholas.

Nicole will celebrate her Bat Mitzvah on May 5, 2007 at Temple Beth El in Tacoma.
Nicole is the daughter of Dave and Barbara Aqua of Tacoma and the sister of Leah. Her grandparents are Harold and Reta Rome of Las Vegas, Nev., Lucille Aqua of Tacoma and the late Sidney Aqua.
Nicole is a 7th-Grader at Truman Middle School. She enjoys competitive gymnastics, volleyball and music.

Ari will celebrate his Bar Mitzvah on May 5, 2007 at Herzl-Ner Tamid Conservative Congregation on Mercer Island.
Ari is the son of Ben and Malori Dahukey of Bellevue and the brother of Jacob. His grandparents are Paul and Launa Winegrad of Bellevue, Miriam Dahukey of Jerusalem and the late Moshe Dahukey.
Ari is a 7th-Grader at Issaquah Middle School. He enjoys playing guitar, lacrosse and tennis.

Joseph will celebrate his Bar Mitzvah on May 5, 2007 at Herzl-Ner Tamid Conservative Congregation on Mercer Island.
Joseph is the son of Stacey and Ken Rudee of Mercer Island and the brother of Eliana. His grandparents are Sandy Friedman of Bellevue, Joyce Strobel of Kirkland, the late Samuel “Buddy” Friedman and the late Elliot Rudee.
Joseph is a 7th-Grader at Islander Middle School. His enjoys being a member of the swim team, computers and cooking.

Albert Jaffe

Albert Jaffe died on Thursday, April 5 at the age of 88. He was born in Fall River, Mass. on June 28, 1918 to Samuel and Tillie Jaffe, who had come from Minsk, Russia. He was the youngest of 10 siblings.
After many years as a retail shoe merchant in a family business, Albert retired at the age of 69. His retirement lasted two weeks, upon which he was hired by Target in Bellevue, where he worked for the next 18 years. For the last 38 years, Albert resided in Bellevue.
Albert will be remembered as a loving and devoted father, dedicated husband, wonderful grandfather, a great friend and animal lover. He never complained and never had a bad word for anyone in his almost 89 years.
Albert Jaffe was predeceased by his wife of 45 years, Adele (Kezner) Jaffe. He is survived by his brother Irv (Gert) Jaffe; brother-in-law George (Mae) Kezner; children Therese, Lonnie (Trish), Norman and Harvey; grandchildren David, Marcelle, Madison, Alison, Julianne; and two great-grandchildren, Aiden and Huck.
Albert’s funeral was held at Herzl Memorial Park on April 8. Memorials may be sent to the Humane Society.

Sam Albert Mossafer

Sam Albert Mossafer died on February 17, 2007. He was born on November 20, 1919 to David and Serena Mossafer.
Sam attended Leschi School, where his team won the city softball title. He then entered Garfield High School, where he played football for four years.
After graduation, Sam received an athletics scholarship to the University of Oregon. His studies were interrupted in 1942 when he entered the U.S. Army as an interrogator of Italian prisoners of war. He was honorably discharged as a sergeant in November 1945.
Sam returned to the University of Oregon to complete his Bachelor’s of Science degree in 1950. He subsequently earned his Doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley in 1953. His publications included: “The Effect of Testosterone on Growth Hormones” (1950); his Doctoral dissertation “Pyramidal System in Willed Movements” (1953); and The Golden Twenty, a book about basketball.
Sam was listed in the “Who’s Who in Human Services Professional 1992-1993” and in “Who’s Who in Industry and Finance 1980-1990.” In 1993, he entered the commercial real estate field, in which he worked until mid-2006.
He was involved over the years with many organizations. He made friends wherever he went.
Sam is survived by his sister, Bernice Mossafer Rind; brother Joseph D. Mossafer; and nephews and nieces, grand-nephews and grand-nieces, and cousins around world including London, Paris, Israel, South Africa, Argentina and Brazil.

Sara Micflik Podolsky Rozenfeld

Sara Micflik Podolsky Rozenfeld died on March 29, 2007 in Toronto, Ont. She was born November 15, 1912 in Chelm, Poland to Rywka Jablon and Szumel Micflik.
Sara was married Feb 19, 1944 to Ruvin Podolsky and the couple moved to Kiev. There, they had three children, Sam, Riva, and Emilia. Sara also helped raise her stepdaughter Raya.
In 1959, Sara and her family left Kiev to move to Canada. Along the way, she lost her husband to illness in Wroclav, Poland in 1960. They arrived in Montreal, Que. in 1961, and in 1975 Sara was remarried to Israel Rozenfeld.
Sara knew six different languages and at one time worked as a bookkeeper in Poland.
Sara was predeceased by her husband, Israel Rozenfeld. She is survived by her sister Ida (Mendel) Silberman of Côte St. Luc, Montreal; children Sam (Joni) Podolsky of Toronto, Riva (Yefim) Kogan of Toronto, and Emilia Mindel of Seattle; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Remembrances can be made to the Washington State Holocaust Education Resource Center, Temple B’nai Torah, the Jewish Day School, the Eastside Torah Center, or Jewish Family Service.

Aviv Michael Caspi

Aviv will celebrate his Bar Mitzvah on April 28, 2007 at Temple B’nai Torah in Bellevue.
Aviv is the son of Inez and Lior Caspi of Bellevue and the brother of Lian. His grandparents are Tzipora and Avraham Caspi of Tel Aviv, Israel, Inga Behr of Calif., and the late Michael Behr.
Aviv is a 7th-Grader at Odle Middle School. He enjoys playing clarinet, soccer, traveling, reading, Monopoly, and playing in chess tournaments. He has an extensive keychain collection from all over the world.
For his special mitzvah project, Aviv collected over 600 English books for kids from his community, then packed and delivered them to several libraries and schools in Israel.

Molly and Samantha Dubow

Molly and Samantha Dubow will celebrate their B’not Mitzvah on Saturday, April 14, 2007 at Temple De Hirsch Sinai in Bellevue.
Molly and Samantha are the daughters of Mark and Tami Rogers and the late Richard Allen Dubow. They are the granddaughters of Leonard Silesky of Minneapolis, Minn., Dr. Irvine and Lillian Dubow of Naples, Fla., Ruth Hynes of Bellevue, and Sydney Rogers of Bellevue.
Molly is a 7th-Grader at Inglewood Junior High. She enjoys ice-skating, cooking, music and volunteering at the Seattle Children’s Hospital.
Samantha is a 6th-Grader at Samantha Smith Elementary School. She enjoys music, hip-hop dance, cooking, art and writing.



Centennial Birthday
Ann Meyers Kaplan

Ann Meyers Kaplan turned 100 years old on March 9, 2007. She was born in New York in 1907 to Louis and Rose Meyers, who had emigrated from Russia just one year earlier. In1910, her family moved to Seattle and settled on Capitol Hill. Her father ran a tailoring business in Pioneer Square from 1915 to 1950. 
In 1926, Ann graduated from Garfield High School. She married Ben J. Kaplan, and the couple had two children, Maxine Kaplan Schnebele of Mercer Island and Arthur Kaplan of La Conner, Wash. She has one grandson, Henry Honig of Mercer Island.
Ann worked as a bookkeeper for Ben’s roofing business and also worked for 20 years at the Bon Marché in downtown Seattle as a sales clerk. In her long life, she has been involved with many Jewish organizations, including the Golden Age group at the Stroum Jewish Community Center.
Ann’s children threw her a wonderful birthday party at Mercer View Community Center, with 90 people in attendance. Relatives arrived to celebrate from around the country including California, Arizona, Colorado, Oregon and Montana. She also received a congratulations letters from Bill and Hillary Clinton, whom she admires.
Ann has three younger siblings: the late Marion Fingold, the late Sam Meyers, and Jack Meyers, 87, who lives in California. She currently resides at Evergreen Court Retirement home in Bellevue.
