Obituary
Meta Stern:02Meta Stern died on September 3, 2007 at the Kline Galland Home at the age of 93.
Meta was born in Mandel, Germany on June 22, 1914. She was the oldest of Moses and Sany Hirsch’s four children. In 1934, Meta married Ludwig Stern, a cattle dealer from Bat Kreutznah, and the couple settled in Weinsheim, Germany. In 1939, Meta and Ludwig fled Nazi Germany and came to America under the sponsorship of Meta’s cousin, Minnie Schoenfeld Arnstein.
Soon after arriving in Seattle, Meta and Ludwig joined the Jewish Club of Washington. There they met other Jewish German immigrants with whom they developed lifelong friendships. Meta served as hospitality chairman, a position that came to her naturally, as she was an excellent cook, baker and hostess. She was also in charge of the oneg Shabbats for Herzl Synagogue.
Meta worked as a meat wrapper at the Pike Place Market and then at the Brenner Brothers Bakery on Cherry Street before she and Ludwig opened their own business, Stern’s Market, around the corner from the Herzl synagogue, where the couple were active members. Meta was a smart and savvy businesswoman. She and Ludwig treated all their customers with kindness and respect and their business grew and thrived.
After Meta and Ludwig moved to Seward Park, they would hold annual SeaFair parties in their home, where upwards of 100 guests would attend. They would also host weekly Shabbat dinners, Pesach seders and Hanukkah get-togethers. Meta also loved to garden and her yard was the envy of the neighborhood. She also enjoyed making needlepoint pillows, which have become prized family heirlooms.
Meta was a warm-hearted, generous, and hardworking woman and she was respected by all who knew her. She was a true lady in every sense of the word. Most of all, Meta was extremely devoted to her family. Her children and grandchildren alike lovingly called her “Oma.”
Meta is survived by her two sons, Dr. Robert (Sheryl) Stern and Eddie Stern; grandchildren Tali Kaplan, Dr. Aaron (Zina) Stern, David (Alejandra) Stern, Leslie (Paul) Kaplan, and great-grandchildren Max, Sam, Adam, Rachel, Zachary, and Zoe. She will also be missed by her nephew Fred (Esther) Kahn and many great nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her husband Ludwig Stern and grandson Mark Stern.

Obituary
Mark SternMark Stern died on July 28, 2007 in Mountain View, Calif., surrounded by his family. He was born on May 28, 1974 in Seattle.
Mark grew up on Mercer Island with his parents Sheryl and Eddie Stern, and his older sister, Leslie. At the age of 10, he discovered his self-assuredness on the stage. As a child actor, he appeared in productions at Youth Theatre Northwest, Issaquah Village Theatre, Renton Civic Theatre and the Mukilteo Community Theatre.
Mark received his Jewish education at Herzl-Ner Tamid Conservative Congregation on Mercer Island. His Bar Mitzvah was a particular source of pride. Summers at camps Solomon Schechter and Ramah further strengthened his sense of Jewish identity.
In high school, Mark excelled scholastically and discovered many interests. He joined DECA and Junior Achievement, the student marketing and business organizations, where he developed his strong business and leaderships skills. Sponsored by Puget Power, Mark was president of three JA companies, leading each to award-winning success. For his work in Junior Achievement, Mark received local, national and international recognition.
A 1996 graduate of the University of Washington, Mark obtained a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Industrial Engineering. Mortar Board, the national college honor society, recognized him for his achievements in scholarship, leadership and community service. Mark was concerned with human welfare. He was a member of WashPIRG, the consumer and environmental advocacy group and AIPAC, the American Israeli Affairs Committee. He was a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity and a tutor and mentor to inner-city children.
While in college, Mark spent a year studying at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Just like everywhere else, he made a name for himself in every arena he visited, from editing his professor’s book on terrorism to nearly sitting in on a meeting with Yassir Arafat and other members of the Palestinian Authority. He loved his year living there. He traveled extensively throughout the region, carrying his stories and experiences in his backpack as he moved from one country to another, one phase of life to the next.
After college, Mark was hired by Intel to work at the company’s headquarters in Santa Clara, Calif. He was promoted from rotation engineer to strategic market analyst to the Intel Think Tank. He worked in Intel’s offices in the United States, England, Germany, Hong Kong and China.
Mark met his wife, Maytal, in San Jose, Calif., while Israeli dancing at a Jewish camp for young adults. They were married in Cesaria, Israel, in October 2004 in an outdoor wedding on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. After a two-month honeymoon in Europe, the couple returned to California. In September 2006, their daughter Zoe was born. She is Mark’s greatest legacy.
For Mark, life was a journey. He rappelled off cliffs, river-rafted, hiked and skied. With his warm smile, he possessed the unique gift of drawing others to him and of bringing people together.
The suddenness of his illness and death stunned his family and shocked the community. After two months of suffering with unresolved back pain, Mark was diagnosed with metastatic testicular cancer. He died 10 days later.
Mark is survived by his wife, Maytal; daughter, Zoe; parents Sheryl and Eddie; sister, Leslie (Paul) Kaplan; nephew Zachary; grandparents Ann and Harry Moises, and Meta Stern; in-laws Efraim and Dalia Shek; and numerous aunts and uncles, cousins and friends.

Anniversary
Paula and Klaus SternPaula and Klaus Stern celebrated 65 years of marriage in August with friends and family.
The couple met at a Jewish training farm near Berlin in 1940. This tremendously large farm was given to the Jewish Federation of Berlin to train young Jewish men and women to become successful farmers in Palestine, Argentina, Australia, or Santa Domingo and escape the Nazis. The Nazis later confiscated the farm. As the war progressed, some of the Jewish farmers were sent to nearby farms to take the place of farmers who were drafted to serve in the Wehrmacht.
In August 1942, Paula and Klaus decided to marry, believing that whatever happened it would be easier to survive together.
In April 1943, the Gestapo came to the farm where the Sterns were working. They brought a group of Ukrainian farmers to replace the Jewish farmers. The Sterns were taken to Berlin, and, one day before Hitler’s birthday, they were loaded into cattle cars and deported to Auschwitz.
Paula and Klaus were immediately separated. But, miraculously, both survived and were reunited after 28 months.
In 1946, they arrived in New York. After a few weeks, they came to Seattle where Klaus’s uncle, Dr. Herman Nossen, a prominent doctor, asked them as the last surviving members of the family to join him and his wife.
Klaus worked for almost 36 years for Langendorf U.B. Inc. In retirement, Klaus and Paula continue to be involved in Jewish community organizations.
Klaus and Paula have a daughter Marion (Carl) Kitz; a son Marvin (Michele) Stern; and four grandchildren, Rebecca, Leah, Rafi and Shira.
