AMIT cares for over 16,000 at-risk youth in 55 schools, youth villages and children’s homes throughout Israel. AMIT currently has three chapters within the Seattle area. The Avivah chapter, founded in 1939, meets the fourth Wednesday of each month for lunch. The Bessie Gottsfeld chapter, started in 1957, meets for dinner. And the Shirley Jassen chapter, started in 1985, serves young women. All of the chapters meet and work on major local fundraisers to benefit AMIT. Most notable are the annual donor luncheon and souvenir journal.
In 1980, the Seattle chapters of AMIT established the Rosanne Marx Speech Therapy Room in Gilo. The chapters fund the equipment and teacher’s salary from generous donations and a special tribute card fund.
Many of AMIT’s students are children from immigrant families (particularly Russian and Ethiopian), from severely dysfunctional families, and from families living at or below the poverty line. AMIT offers intensive academic and technological education as well as religious instruction, instilling Torah values and a sense of tolerance, unity and respect.
These values and this religious foundation, moral fiber, and sound education distinguish AMIT students, who go out into the world prepared to assume responsible roles in Israeli society. AMIT helps Israel by helping the children of Israel. AMIT is Israel’s official network for religious secondary technological training.
AMIT includes schools, youth villages, surrogate homes and junior colleges. In addition, since its inception, AMIT has been at the forefront of helping to integrate and educate Israel’s immigrants. Presently, many recent Russian and Ethiopian children benefit from an AMIT education they might otherwise not be able to afford. AMIT counts over 80,000 members in the United States who are part of various chapters across the country.
